Friends of mine that know me often ask me what I think about domain name extensions. So I decided to make my first blog about how to choose between the various domain name extensions that you have to pick from.

Does Google Give More Weight to .com Domain Names?

Absolutely not. Just because you have a .com does not automatically give you more weight in the search engines. Domain name extensions are not a factor when it comes to determining which webpages will rank higher than other pages.

So, You are Saying that Having a .com Domain Name is Not Beneficial?

Well, no, I wouldn't say that. I would say that having a .com has no impact as far as SEO goes, however, I think it would be easier for customers to remember than say a .US

Which Domain Name Extension Should I Buy?

I recommend to everyone that they purchase a .com just for the fact that I believe it is easier to remember. If you are set on a domain name but the .com is taken, try modifying the domain name. For instance, if you want domainnames.com but that is taken, try domain-names.com if it is available. If it is not available, you may purchase an alternative domain name extension, but ensure if you are marketing it offline, that you advertise the extension as well as you do not want to lose potential visitors to the .com.
